This position is responsible for, both directly and through the Team Leader the provision of services to clients. As such, the incumbent requires the proven technical expertise to independently complete and certify large- and small-scale projects, work in cooperation with other level engineers, field personnel, and technicians, and work under the direction of a Team Leader or Project Manager. Work is generally not supervised in detail, with the amount of supervision being based on complexity of the proposed project or client requirements. This engineering position is operational in nature, reporting directly to the Team Leader. Project work will be assigned by the Team Lead in terms of broad objectives to be accomplished and is reviewed for policy, soundness of approach, and general effectiveness.

 

Your main responsibilities 

 

Core Responsabilities.

 

  • Project design engineer working in cooperation with project selected lead, engineering, and technical staff to successfully complete assigned projects.
  • Assist Team Lead in the training of ENG 01 & 02 staff.
  • Make independent decisions on project work methods and procedures, however, difficult, complex, large monetary, or unusual matter decisions are referred to more senior staff members.
  • Devise practical and economical solutions to project problems in cooperation with Team Leader or Project Manager.
  • Give technical guidance to Junior Engineers or technicians assigned to work on a common project.
  • Take courses of action necessary to expedite the successful completion of assigned projects.
  • In cooperation with the Team Lead and Senior Engineering Specialist, work as a Project Engineer on projects of varying size & scope. Responsibilities to include: Participation in selection of the proposed structural system & development of building layouts. Performance of all facets of the building design, including preparation of detailed & accurate construction drawings. Participation in the assessment of new/emerging technologies and structural systems. Evaluation of changes to design & material codes/standards, design software, and updating design approaches/methodologies in cooperation with Team Lead. Client Service delivery.
  • Deliver services on a portfolio of client engagements.
  • Maintain expected level of client service delivery quality on projects.
  • Follow departmental processes on all engagements to successfully deliver to the client and achieve targeted project profitability.
  • Perform tasks necessary to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and client requests.

Business Development.

  • Develop and maintain client relationships, identify new business opportunities.
  • Responsible for receiving requests for proposals. Work cooperatively with Department Manager to prepare when required

Core Duties

  • Perform the structural analysis and design of building members in accordance with the applicable Building Codes and Standards.
  • Perform the analysis and design of structural elements utilizing hand calculation techniques and Computer Design Software including (but not limited to): SAFE, ETABS, SCONC, EXCEL, SP-SLAB, Woodworks, and more.
  • Perform the analysis and design of structural elements of a variety of materials including concrete, steel, masonry, light-gage metal, wood, and pre-cast.
  • Preparation of accurate structural drawings and sketches utilizing hand drafting techniques, and/or, CAD drafting software (AutoCAD, REVIT Structures).
  • Work in cooperation with CAD Operators, utilizing drafting software, to develop accurate project structural drawings and sketches.
  • Attendance at regular Departmental and Project Meetings with Team Leader and Department Manager.
  • Perform on-site investigations as required to confirm existing site conditions and to perform associated project analysis and design functions.
  • Perform on-site field reviews of construction/renovation/rehabilitation projects to assess constructed element conformance, including the preparation of any associated field review reports, site instructions, change orders, progress draw approvals, and letters of certification.
  • Work in cooperation with Field Personnel performing on-site field reviews of construction/renovation/rehabilitation projects to assess constructed element conformance.   • Prepare clear and concise structural engineering reports and studies for clients and managers. Preparation of reports includes proper formatting and layouts in accordance with Departmental standards.
  • Review, understand, and summarize project reports prepared by other consultants as required obtain applicable project information.
  • Participate in regular skills training and professional development including attendance at seminars and courses.
  • Regularly review all material and building codes and standards (including all updates) to ensure accuracy of structural designs and analysis techniques and requirements.
  • Regularly review all Human Resource documentation in a timely manner.
  • Regularly review the Corporate Health and Safety Policy as well as all supplement policies.

 

Your Profile

  • Completed undergraduate degree in Structural (Civil) Engineering or Applied Sciences degree. 
  • Extensive knowledge of structural engineering processes and technical concepts including all applicable building codes and standards.
  • Project management skills and ability to deliver projects on time to the satisfaction of the customer.
  • Understanding of the CJE Proficiency Framework.
  • Professional title or accreditation :
  • 7 years of overall experience in building structural engineering and good knowledge of the Canadian building code. 
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken. French is an asset.  
  • Experience with SAFE, ETABS, SCONC, EXCEL, SP-SLAB, Woodworks, and more. 
  • Possesses a strong balance of technical and people skills.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop design drawings and sketches.
  • Construction project experience including the preparation of construction documents, tender processes, and field documentation.
  • Strong commitment to professional and customer service excellence.
  • Ability to deliver customer solutions (ability to critically assess customer situation and present solutions).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Strong customer-facing capabilities skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
