ABOUT THIS ROLE

Burlington Hydro Inc. (“BHI”) is seeking a Substation Electrician Apprentice to join our team. Reporting to the Supervisor, Stations, the successful candidate will enroll in the MEARIE Substation Electrician certification program and work toward completing the required hours and training for certification.

 

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the apprentice will progressively develop skills and take on increasing responsibilities, including testing, installing, and maintaining substation equipment, performing cable testing and fault locating for underground systems, and conducting transformer testing and electrical maintenance. Once certified, the incumbent will be responsible for independently carrying out these tasks. This role must adhere to company work practices, standards, and operating rules, as well as all relevant regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

 

This is an on-site position at 1340 Brant Street, Burlington, and is a unionized role governed by the collective agreement.

                                               

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the installation, repair and maintenance of all substation equipment
  • Perform electrical and mechanical testing on substation equipment as needed
  • Conduct routine equipment maintenance such as breakers, protection relays, battery chargers and batteries
  • Conduct routine maintenance of main office and substation buildings
  • Investigate and troubleshoot substation faults and failures
  • Install, maintain and repair AC and DC substation service systems
  • Test and maintain distribution transformers
  • Collect scheduled and periodic substation data and maintain detailed substation equipment and maintenance records
  • Perform cable testing, cable locating and fault locating of underground plant
  • Assist in emergency and on-call situations as required
  • Recalibrate protective devices, substation SCADA and System Intelligent Devices and System Network Configuration
  • Review and revise related electrical and mechanical prints, drawings and diagrams using AutoCAD
  • All other duties as assigned

 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Electrical Engineering Technology Diploma program from an accredited post-secondary institution or equivalent work experience
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license with a clean abstract

 

 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Ability to complete the MEARIE Substation Electrician certification program requirements
  • Proficiency in interpreting work orders, specifications, standards, and blueprints/drawings
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with excellent reading comprehension and mathematical abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels and provide positive interactions with the public
  • Possess and maintain a level of physical fitness essential for the demands of the job, including the ability to confidently work at heights, climb structures, and perform tasks in confined spaces
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Working knowledge of MS Office applications with the ability to adapt to new software and systems; familiarity with AutoCAD is an asset
  • Proven commitment to safety and maintaining a strong attendance record
