The Department of Experiential Studies in Community and Sport (XCS) in the School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) at Cape Breton University (CBU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (depending on current achieved rank) in Community, Sport, and Physical Activity (CSP). This position will commence on September 1st, 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

One of Canada’s youngest and most ambitious universities, CBU recognizes its location on Cape Breton Island as part of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. CBU offers a comprehensive set of liberal arts, science, and professional programs and a unique commitment to community, economic development, aboriginal learning, and research into many aspects of environment and culture. CBU’s vision of higher education allows students to pursue diverse fields of study in programs with national reputations in final year student satisfaction, faculty-student interaction, and employability.

CBU delivers an authentic multicultural experience to all who become part of its academic community. Surrounded by pristine natural landscape, vibrant culture, and welcoming communities on Canada’s stunning east coast, CBU attracts students from more than 50 countries around the world. Our faculty bring passion to their teaching and research and we are known for our friendly and inclusive culture. Strong community involvement and a spirit of entrepreneurship enhance CBU's position in post-secondary education.

The successful candidate’s teaching, research, and service will demonstrate commitment to and expertise in Community, Sport, and Physical Activity – broadly defined. The successful candidate’s teaching will contribute to the XCS department, which houses the core interdisciplinary courses for the degree, as well as the courses for one of the BACS degree’s most popular disciplines: Sport and Physical Activity Leadership (SPAL).

The successful candidate will be prepared to teach COMS courses in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment and have experience using various progressive pedagogies in their teaching, including but not limited to i) self-directed learning, ii) reflexive intra-personal learning, iii) group/inter-personal development, iv) experiential learning, and v) community-based and/or service learning. The successful candidate will also be prepared to teach SPAL courses, with expertise and capability of leading courses that explore two or more of the following: i) concepts of human movement, ii) physical activity promotion, iii) physical activity for healthy active living, and iv) exercise and personal fitness.

The successful candidate’s research program should show evidence of engagement in the area of Community, Sport, and Physical Activity. The successful candidate should possess the ability to disseminate research findings through various sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles, books/book chapters, conference presentations, knowledge translation materials, creative outputs) and attract external research funding commensurate with appropriate academic rank. The successful candidate will also become part of the newly launched Institute in Community, Sport, and Health at CBU.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in any discipline related to the study of community, sport, physical activity, health, wellness, leisure, or recreation – broadly defined. Candidates who are in the later stages of their Ph.D. may be considered, with the successful completion of the Ph.D. being a condition of employment.

The successful candidate will also be committed to and passionate about building deep and reciprocal relationships with Unama’ki-Cape Breton communities centered on sport/physical activity/health/leisure/recreation as informed by their disciplinary expertise. Prior experience and/or a strong interest in fostering community and community capacity through teaching, research, and service activities is a strong asset.

CBU teaches programs on campus, off campus in locations across and outside of Canada, and online. The university and its partners will therefore provide opportunities for faculty members to teach in different modes in different locations as part of their regular workload. While these opportunities may not be available equally for all faculty positions in all programs, a clear willingness to teach in different modes and locations (if applicable) should be noted in your application.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate potential and commitment with regard to teaching, research/creative/scholarly activities and service to Cape Breton University, community, and profession.

Applications for the successful candidate will include a:

  • two page cover letter describing the expertise of the applicant and reference number (#140)
  • statement of teaching philosophy and interests
  • statement of research plan
  • complete CV including a list of publications
  • evidence of effective teaching
  • list of at least three references.
