Based in Seattle, WA, the Director, People & Culture, Coast Hotels USA Inc, will oversee the People & Culture function for Coast Hotels USA Inc. and its operating hotels. In this role, the Director will drive the Engaged Ambassador – People & Culture strategy, supporting both short- and long-term business goals. As a strategic partner to senior leadership, they will ensure that people practices align with Coast Hotels’ Mission, Vision, and Brand Promise, adhere to U.S. labor laws, and foster both Ambassador engagement and exceptional guest experiences.
Responsibilities:
Business Leadership
- Advises the Senior Coast Hotels USA Inc. Leadership Team clear strategies for the People & Culture function to enhance people practices and company-wide performance
- Solicits the involvement of relevant Coast Hotels leaders in each area of the business to build strategic plans, ensuring leadership understanding and hotel buy-in
- Maintains industry and professionalexpertise by reviewingrelevant industry communication and analysisreports, and builds an effective network within the industry and/or profession
- Advises the Senior Coast Hotels USA Inc. Leadership Team about the organizational change initiatives required to support the business strategy; the specific implementation plans for change and clearly communicates plans to all relevant groups
- Works with other leaders to support the development and clear articulation of the company Mission, Vision and Brand Promise
- Makes decisions and forms strategies that balance the unique needs of the different properties
Operational Leadership
- Establishes clearengaged Ambassador plans, targets, and budgets to support operational excellence
- Closely monitors and measures plans and targets, identifying problem areas and proactively taking charge of solutions; accountable for the performance of the functional area
- Advises the Senior Coast Hotels USA Leadership Team about the processes to ensure decisions and actions are followed through and plans executed specifically as they relate to: Organizational Effectiveness, Organizational Learning, Compensation and Benefits, Labour Relations, Trade Unions, Occupational Health & Safety, and Human Resources Professional Practices
- Ensures the application of relevant legislation and regulations (i.e., Human Rights, OH&S, WCB, Employment Standards, Labour Code, Collective Agreements) and monitors for compliance
- Advises on and participates in the collective bargaining process with Unite Here Local 8
People & Culture Leadership
- Builds a strong team of People & Culture Representatives with appropriate skills and talents through effective recruitment, mentoring, development and professional people practices
- Ensures company wide recognition practices are in place – both formal and informal – providing recognition to those who deliver excellent results and/or model Coast’s Values and Leadership Accountability
- Advises the Senior Coast Hotels USA Inc Leadership Team about clear performance standards that motivate Ambassadors to achieve and/or exceed those targets; monitors and manages overall performance of the P&C team
- Effectively communicates the organization’s people strategies so all Ambassadors clearly understand it
- Supports Coast Hotels’ culture by modelling Coast’s Values & Leadership Accountability, supporting leaders to align their own actions and ensuring all ambassadors are focused on Coast’s Values & Leadership Accountability
- Works with the Coast Hotels' Leadership Team to manage the evolution of the Coast Hotels culture to ensure that it is in alignment with the Coast's Values & Leadership Accountability
- Identifies succession needs and risks; talent requirements and high potential talent, and actively develops key talent for the overall organization
- Takes responsibility for the attainment of desired ASI results and implements improvement plans based on feedback
- Builds strong working relationships through visibility, availability, clear and frequent two-way communication, collaboration and involvement
Guest & Community Leadership
- Advises the Senior Coast Hotels USA Inc Leadership Team about the evolving needs of guests to ensure that the company continues to meet these changing needs and delivers exceptional service;
- Identifies and advises the Senior Coast Hotels USA Inc Leadership Team on a community involvement plan, within the industry and building a positive reputation for the company through active participation and support
- Lives the Coast Hotels' values and reflects the brand in the community; fosters a positive image of Coast Hotels and its people
- Other duties as required
Skills/Knowledge/Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent combination of experience and education
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive human resources experience; with 5 years’ experience in a leadership role, and 3 years in a senior leadership capacity
- SHRM designation or equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to influence the decision-making process at the senior executive level
- Proven ability to design, implement and maintain people-centered programs, policies and procedures that align with organization goals and strategies
- Understanding of human, team and organizational dynamics, so as to be able to proactively anticipate desired outcomes
- Highly developed interpersonal communication, and conflict resolution skills
- Proactive and solid organizational and administrative management skills with an ability to plan and successfully execute company – wide people programs and/or major change initiatives across the organization
- Strong overall understanding of organizational operations, industry, and best practices
- Not content with the status quo; driven to create positive change and growth
