About Musqueam

We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people. Our lands and waters continue to support our cultural and economic practices while serving as a source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws. Position Summary:

The Environmental Analyst provides technical support to the Environmental Stewardship Assistant Manager & Program Manager, and as directed, to the Musqueam Fisheries Department, and Intergovernmental Affairs. The Environmental Analyst will report directly to the Environmental Stewardship Manager and duties may involve working with other analyst staff. This position works closely with Environmental/Musqueam staff and other parties to implement Musqueam’s environmental stewardship plans, programs and communications, which will include collaboration with partners, and engagement with community and Musqueam leadership.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Reviews and analyses referrals and proposed projects and plans;
• Conducts research, analysis, and provides support for negotiations in conjunction with proponents and other parties;
• Works closely with MIB technical staff to ensure leadership and community members are engaged in, and informed about, environmental and stewardship projects;
• Assists with implementing the environmental and stewardship plans to ensure alignment with other MIB initiatives and plans;
• Organizes community engagement sessions, including preparing presentation materials and newsletters;
• Organizes educational activities for Musqueam community, scholastic and neighbouring community groups;
• Reports on and plans environmental stewardship projects (work plans, budgets, implementing strategies, etc.) in coordination with other team members and/or areas; and
• Other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Bachelor’s degree with technical courses related to urban planning, political science and/or environmental sciences and/or an equivalent combination of coursework and experience;
• A minimum of one year’s experience in environmental management/policy/planning or similar, including experience working with committee and/or Council structures;
• Strong research skills;
• Knowledge of, or skills required to gain knowledge of, permit processes and environmental legislation and regulations;
• Strong understanding of Indigenous history and politics in British Columbia; cultural competency and knowledge of Musqueam cultural traditions and interests is preferred;
• Experienced in Microsoft Word and Excel programs;

• Professional-level report writing, analysis, and communication abilities required;

• Analytical skills with problem solving abilities;
• Detailed orientedl

• Ability to work responsibly with minimal supervision, both individually and with a team;

• Ability to collaborate with others and work with cross functional teams;
• Ability to coordinate and direct educational and environmental activities with the public;

• Ability to use tact and good judgement in dealing with sensitive and complex issues; 
• Must be able to work under tight deadlines;
• Ability to maintain confidentiality;

• Level 1 First Aid considered an asset;
• Proven ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.

• Valid Driver’s License;
• Criminal Record Check.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in an office environment and periodically in the community.
