Systems Engineer

The Systems Engineer is responsible for management and support of various infrastructure technologies on the distributed system platforms. The incumbent will design build and maintain technical solutions based on business requirements and evaluation of information technology trends and practices.

 

The engineer will require a broad skill set with excellent problem solving and analytical skills in addition to a strong automation and programmatic, Infrastructure as Code, approach to systems management.
 

Key Accountabilities:

• Design, install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools
• Create and maintain systems configuration leveraging industry standard configuration management tools and processes
• Translate business requirements into technical solutions utilizing best practices and standards that meet the strategic business goal
• Develop scripts for programmatic solutions to complex systems tasks
• Identify system resource bottlenecks and work with other teams to test and tune systems for optimal performance
• Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability
• Create, maintain and enforce systems standards
• Create and maintain procedural and technical documentation
• Provide 2nd and 3rd level systems support
• Provide rotational on-call support outside of regular business hours
• Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution
• Identify and recommend emerging technologies as they relate to team objectives
• Demonstrate strong organizational and priority setting skills coupled with strong written and verbal communication skills
• Be a thought leader who is capable of initiating and driving change
   

Skills and Experience:

Must Have(s)

• Postsecondary Education or relevant work experience in Computer Science or Engineering
• Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in System Administration in a distributed Linux and Windows environment
• Deep Windows Server operating system knowledge, and  a good understanding of Linux
• Experience leveraging DevOps practices to automate IT service delivery
• Minimum 5 years experience with virtualization (VMWare)
• Experience with OS deployment systems (SCCM)
• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
• Excellent scripting skills (Perl, Powershell, Python, Ruby)
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Nice to Have(s):
• Experience with log analytics tools (Splunk, ELK)
• Experience with data protection products (Netbackup, Cohesity)
• Public cloud infrastructure experience, ideally AWS an asset
• Experience with configuration management systems (Ansible)
• Experience with Cisco UCS, and Nutanix an asset
• Experience with workflow automation (Servicenow)
