Position Summary:

Westcorp is a comprehensive real estate development, investment and management company with a 40-year history that specializes in residential, retail, office, hospitality and mixed-use projects in Alberta and British Columbia. Westcorp is looking for an Assistant Controller to lead and mentor its team of property accountants.

As a key financial leader at Westcorp, the Assistant Controller will oversee financial reporting and accounting operations across our real estate portfolio. This role blends technical expertise with people leadership to develop an empowered accounting team and drive continuous improvement in financial processes.

Note: While this role is currently posted as Assistant Controller, Westcorp is open to considering candidates at the Controller level based on experience and skill set. We are also committed to supporting the professional development of the successful candidate into a future Controller role within the organization.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Lead, mentor, and support a team of property accountants.
    • Foster a high-performance, career-focused team environment aligned with company values. 
  • Financial Oversight
    • Oversee timely preparation of internal and external financial reporting packages.
    • Review working papers, reconciliations, variance analysis, and cash flow forecasts.
  • Corporate & Stakeholder Reporting
    • Prepare reporting for corporate-level entities.
    • Maintain strong relationships with auditors and external stakeholders.
  • Budgeting & Planning
    • Manage the annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes.
    • Lead year-end close and commercial cost reconciliations.
  • Process Improvement
    • Continuously evaluate and enhance financial systems, policies, and procedures.

 

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA).
  • At least 1 year of experience leading accounting or finance professionals.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience.
  • Experience in real estate accounting and Yardi is considered an asset.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams), with advanced Excel skills preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Exceptional communication ability, written and verbal.
  • Delivers accurate work with a high degree of precision.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be flexible, adaptable to changing requirements and solutions-minded.
  • High degree of professionalism and dedication to all stakeholders.
  • Highly organized, results-oriented and able to work in a multi-functional team environment.
