About the role 

This position is responsible for the analysis, data processing and reporting of data from the LRMS, triple-quad, and/or GCMS systems. On a daily basis, this person is responsible primarily for the analysis of routine analytical methods, including sample preparation for specific methods, the assessment, coding, and reporting of analytical data, and instrument maintenance.  This position also serves as a backup analyst for up to two routine sample analyses.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Able to analyse samples for two routine organic chemistry methods independently, as a secondary analyst;
  • Perform routine maintenance to ensure that LRMS and/or GCMS instrumentation is in good working order;
  • Standard-making for up to two routine analytical standard sets;
  • Calibration of analytical instruments;
  • Carry out all required record-keeping and documentation;
  • Maintain spare instrument parts in good working order;
  • Data processing, review and reporting (LIMS and Excel) for a variety of instrument methods;
  • Evaluate data and trouble-shoot problems with the data/extraction/analysis;
  • Interpret data, conduct calculations, and transfer data into electronic data collection software;
  • Communicate with team lead, senior analyst(s),  and direct supervisor regarding workload, as required;
  • Ensure the quality of the analytical data meets ALS standards;
  • Monitoring stocks and ordering supplies for the LR-GCMS department;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new procedures;
  • Assist in other analytical sections of the lab as required;
  • Organize workload to meet Turn around Times (TAT’s) and hold times.  Must be able to prioritize and multitask as many tests are run daily;
  • Able to query a work list of samples, create work groups, data entry and transfer, report generation and LIMS status updates;
  • Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;
  • Must be well organised, and able to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment;
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Work in accordance with the established health and safety policies and procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Other duties as assigned  

 

About you:

  • Well organized, able to prioritize and multitask;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Highly motivated with a positive attitude and strong work ethic;
  • Ability to work independently, or as part of a team,  with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent English communication skills (written & verbal);
  • Proficient computer skills including LIMS, MS Word, MS Excel;
  • Ability to work to deadlines in a fast paced environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2 or more year(s) of extensive lab experience, including at least two years operating GC instruments and processing data;
  • Completion of technical diploma or B.Sc. degree in chemistry or related field

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs and carry for short distances;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  • Ability to stand or sit for a full shift;
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and weekend shift work including weekends.
