The Opportunity:

Based in Calgary or Edmonton, this leadership role offers the opportunity to shape and grow our bridge operations in Alberta, while working closely with our established Major Bridges team in British Columbia. Reporting to the Operations Leader of Calgary Engineering or Edmonton Engineering depending on the location of the successful candidate, the Alberta Bridge Lead will oversee a team of a dozen bridge engineers and technicians across both cities, contributing to a larger Western Canadian bridge practice of 30+ professionals delivering a full range of services from inspection and rehabilitation to the design of standard and major bridges.

As a key member of our bridge leadership team, you’ll collaborate with experts across disciplines—transportation planning and design, geomatics, hydrotechnical, geotechnical, construction supervision, and more—to deliver integrated solutions across Western Canada. 

We’re looking for a Professional Engineer with a proven track record in both technical delivery and business development of bridge projects, including municipal, highway, transit, and pedestrian structures.  What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Lead diverse projects: envision and manage technical, logistical, and financial aspects and oversee engineering design from proposal stage through to commissioning of the work
  • Hire, retain, coach and mentor staff fostering a positive and an engaged culture
  • Facilitate continuous learning and professional development of team members
  • Collaborate with branches across the region and company to support local projects
  • Lead business development, workload balancing, staffing, equipment, safety, quality, and financial outcomes within the bridge market
  • Develop new business opportunities and establish strategic relationships with key clients, agencies, and partners
  • Represent McElhanney to the external environment including clients, businesses, and professional associations to enhance McElhanney’s positive public profile.
  • Serve as a senior technical leader for bridge engineering across the company as part of our Technical Service Group program


Qualifications: 

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university with strong technical skills and 15+ years of related technical experience.
  • Registration in good standing as a Professional Engineer in Alberta or ability to obtain registration through existing inter-jurisdictional agreements

The salary range for this position is $150,000 - $190,000 per annum along with the opportunity to participate in our generous Performance Bonus Plan and to become a shareholder in an employee-owned company.
