Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Advisor
The Opportunity:

As such, we are searching for a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Advisor for our Vancouver and Vancouver Island Regions who is as passionate about safety as we are. You will act as a trusted advisor to help weave safety into all that we do across our operations.
In this role, you will contribute to projects of varying size, risk, and complexity by partnering with project managers and management to deliver safe projects, and team-up with a HSE service center that is committed to providing the organization with effective and efficient system-based and people-centered solutions. You will work with branch operations in our Vancouver and Vancouver Island Regions, JOHSC committees, Branch HSE Representatives, and the McElhanney HSE team to support the effective implementation and continuous improvement of McElhanney’s HSE Management System (HSEMS).
Please note that this is a predominantly office-based position with some travel to field project worksites and offices across the regions required. The successful candidate can be based out of any of McElhanney’s offices in the Metro Vancouver area and Vancouver Island.
This role is designated as a safety sensitive position, and therefore pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be required.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Coach, support, and audit operations across the Vancouver & Vancouver Island Regions.
- Develop Safe Work Methods in collaboration with subject matter experts and support the continuous improvement of all elements within McElhanney’s HSEMS.
- Deliver online and in-person training and education to employees.
- Provide support, coaching, and feedback to supervisors in the investigation of incidents, determining root causes, and the recommendation of corrective actions.
- Proactively identify non-conformance issues and general opportunities for improvement. Assist in the development of solutions to improve safety performance.
- Complete McElhanney’s Subcontractor HSE Prequalification Process as required for projects.
- Represent McElhanney HSE and communicate with OHS regulators and client representatives, as well as consultants and/or subcontractors as required.
- Perform internal audits and provide recommendations and corrective actions to management.
- Conduct worksite inspections on field project worksites to help verify the effective implementation of McElhanney’s HSE Management System (HSEMS) and provide continuous improvement opportunities for workers and the Branch.
- Administrative tasks relating to data tracking, data entry, and document retention.
- Other tasks as assigned.
What You’ll Bring:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an OHS role; strong technical knowledge of OHS hazards, regulations, and best practices related to construction or other high-risk industries.
- Attention to detail, and an ability to work well in a team environment
- Ability to effectively use technology (mobile devices, apps, HSE software, etc.) and be proficient in Generative AI such as ChatGPT and MS Co-Pilot, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Excellent organizational skills, communication skills, and strong technical writing skill
- Champion’s Spirit – To work independently with minimal supervision and to walk with your team through changes and ambiguous situations
Bonus Points For:
- Diploma or certificate in OHS and/or CRSP or CRST designation, or being a candidate for either designation
- Experience in the following is an asset
- Civil construction.
- Remote worksites.
- A widely dispersed workforce of small crews or individuals
- A multi-disciplinary business supporting a combination of office and field work.
- Experience providing training in physical and virtual classroom environments is an asset.

- Salary Range: The salary range for this position is $65K -$90k per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting.
