The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

About the role

 

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centred around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Communications Advisor is integral to this work and will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative, and focused on inspiring action.

 

Reporting to the Director, Public Affairs, the Communications Advisor works collaboratively with the Public Affairs team and several other teams throughout the Museum to create content and help craft the Museum’s public image.

 

This role suits an incumbent with a broad, generalist skill set, as the demands of the role shift based on the needs of the Museum. The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator with a willingness to consider input from multiple perspectives, develop new skills, who is engaged with human rights movements and stories, and is interested in working in a museum setting.

 

What you will do

 

  • Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion, and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
  • Prepares, revises, and edits communication products, including web content, exhibition webpages, digital exhibits, video scripts, audio (i.e., podcast) scripts, presentations, talking points, speeches, newsletters, corporate reports, government briefing documents, fact sheets, brochure,s and other materials. 
  • Acts as one of the Museum’s primary English-language editors for communications assets developed by teams throughout the Museum
  • Participates in issues management and supports the development of responses to inquiries made to the Museum, including those made by media outlets, community organizations and on social media.
  • Acts as a point of contact for external partners in the development of communications assets and strategies to support Museum events, education programs, and other initiatives.
  • Assists the Administrative Coordinator and Media Relations Specialist with media monitoring and reporting.
  • Provides support and guidance around internal communications needs, including regular development of material for the Intranet site, preparation of responsive points and assisting in the development of internal communications products.
  • Assists and serves as the back-up to the Media Relations Specialist for creating media products, coordinating or conducting media interviews on the Museum’s behalf and assisting with the development of news releases, media advisories and/or media events.
  • Assists with the execution of public events and programs at the Museum, including providing feedback and recommendations on event planning, messaging, and runs-of-show.

 

What we’re looking for

 

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in human rights, journalism, communications, political science, public policy, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in one of the following areas of communications: public relations, content creation, internal communications, analytics, writing and editing.
  • Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
  • Demonstrated commitment to learning, self-reflection and growth.
  • Ability to present facts in language and style that is appropriate to the target audience.
  • Ability to identify risks associated with a communications strategy and raise pertinent issues in a timely fashion.
  • Professional writing and editing skills; the ability to inform others, increase awareness, persuade or change behaviour.
  • Openness to incorporate input from multiple sources and adapt to dynamic priorities and timelines.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise tact and diplomacy in all undertakings.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Effectively conveys messages with sensitivity and clarity, while maintaining a commitment to accessibility, inclusivity, and human rights principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritize.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

 

Desired Qualifications

 

  • Experience in any of the following aspects of communications: (e.g., public relations, development of podcasts or video series’, communications planning, strategic planning) is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in both official languages (English and French).
