SUMMARY
The Dispatcher plays a key role in coordinating and managing the movement of freight across various terminal locations. This position is responsible for scheduling and dispatching linehaul drivers, ensuring timely, efficient, and safe transportation of goods. The Dispatcher will collaborate closely with drivers, and other operations personnel to maintain optimal routes, ensure compliance with company policies, and provide exceptional customer service.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible to understand and have full knowledge of Erb Transport computer dispatch system and its requirements. Ensure moves are up to date in system. Have full knowledge of delivery service schedules and customer requirements.
- Delegate and prioritize pick-up of freight to ensure movement of freight to outer terminals can be done efficiently. This is critical for outer terminals and following delivery schedule of freight. Communicate with Operations Manager when required to ensure quality decisions.
- Dispatch drivers on delivery with knowledge of hours of service and company driver policy.
- Prepare list of trailers requested by city-local dispatch for the following day.
- Receive yard check to ensure accurate temperatures, trailer numbers, and settings match up with bills. Communicate with shop as to equipment needs and any required repairs.
- To be familiar with Erb Transport Dock Operations, O.S.D issues, and Driver Service Regulations. Act as a liaison between city dispatch and incoming drivers.
- Consult with dock personnel as to equipment and load requirements. Set priorities with incoming and outgoing loads.
- Communicate with other terminals and Central Dispatch regarding pickups, direct deliveries, driver availability etc. Co-ordinate with Line haul arrival and departure of drivers.
- Assist in answering incoming calls after reception hours. Direct to appropriate personnel.
- Answer customer requests as they pertain to Dispatch and Delivery procedures. Provide continuous communication in order to move product quickly and economically.
- Receive incoming freight when required. Ensure paperwork is clear and accurate.
- Understand the stickering, data entry, load and go, and routing functions. Prepare delivery and road manifests as required.
- All other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience on Erb systems including AS400.
- Previous experience in a dispatcher role considered an asset.
- Good keyboarding skills and experience using computers including MS Office applications required.
- Must have attention to detail and accuracy under pressure to meet deadlines within a busy environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to change and make effective decisions.
- Strong time management and organization skills.
- Knowledge of Greater Toronto Area (GTA) geography.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Overtime as required.
- May require flexibility in work shifts to provide vacation coverage as needed.
